Dr. Chip Buckwell Named Regional Superintendent of the Year

Published Thursday, June 13, 2019

Kannapolis City Schools' Dr. Chip Buckwell was named the Superintendent of the Year for the Southwest region of North Carolina. Dr. Buckwell was honored for his excellence in increasing the district's business and community partnerships and expanding career opportunities for KCS students.

Under Dr. Buckwell's leadership, KCS has expanded its career and technical opportunities for students, increased collaboration with Rowan-Cabarrus Community College (RCCC), and added partnerships with the Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and the faith community. The district now offers a highly successful welding program in partnership with RCCC that allows students to earn industry-recognized welding credentials and college credit while they are in high school.

Since becoming the Superintendent in January 2016, KCS has increased student achievement, and the district began offering magnet programs for the first time in 2017. Dr. Buckwell has also been instrumental in increasing STEM opportunities for all KCS students.

Dr. Chip Buckwell is a tremendous advocate for workforce development and we are thankful for his efforts in strengthening the relationship between businesses and our community. Congratulations, Dr. Buckwell, on being named the 2020 Superintendent of the Year for the Southwest region!
