One of the most successful professional stock car racing teams in the world chose to set up its business in Concord over 30 years ago, in part, because of owner Rick Hendrick’s ties to the community. However, it has stayed and grown from one building to nine buildings and more than 600 employees due to the fact that the Concord area has everything it needs to succeed.

Workforce Development Partnerships

With over 600 jobs, a top priority for Hendrick Motorsports is to operate in an area that has the ability to fulfill all of its workforce development needs. The city of Concord hits the  sweet spot when it comes to prospective employees because of the large number of students in strong engineering programs in the Carolinas, such as NC State and UNC Charlotte, who want to stay in the area to work. In fact, Hendrick Motorsports has even partnered with UNC Charlotte to develop a new job-specific curriculum as the sport of auto racing continues to evolve.

For its fabrication jobs, Hendrick Motorsports has also partnered with Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) to develop an automotive technology program that provides the team with well qualified candidates for fabricator positions. Concord is also centrally located to smaller, more rural areas like Rowan County, where the company is able to fill a large number of its blue-collar tradesman and mechanical job positions.

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and the North Carolina Manufacturing Institue also provide workforce training right here in Cabarrus County to support businesses with their labor needs.

A Great Fit for Automotive Companies

Concord is such a great fit for companies in the automotive industry because of the strong ties with the local NASCAR teams. Positions in the auto racing industry pay a slightly higher salary, which is extremly attractive to any job seeker. Because of NASCAR’s demanding requirements, many of these workers have to be very precise and highly trained individuals.

An Attractive Location for Employees

The Concord area fulfills a lot of needs for today’s emerging workforce generation. More and more, employees are literally in the driver’s seat, and having an attractive location to work plays a big role. Employees who are looking for work-life balance want an area with plenty to see and do. Residents of Concord enjoy a small community feel with all of the amenities of a big city. With a vibrant arts and entertainment scene, new restaurants and breweries around every corner, and a growing historic downtown district, there is plenty to keep them busy. Countless attractions are just a short drive away – from shopping at Concord Mills to entertainment at the Great Wolf Lodge, PNC Music Pavilion, Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, the Davis Theatre, and the U.S. National Whitewater Center. The area is also known for its professional and semi-professional sports teams, festivals and other outdoor activities. Additionally, the strong schools, elaborate parks and greenways, and family-friendly neighborhoods make it a desirable area to settle down in. Concord, a city of just over 90,000 residents, has easy access to downtown Charlotte in addition to being positioned just a daytrip from the mountains and sunshine-filled Carolina beaches. All of this creates an environment that appeals to multiple generations in various stages of life. There is literally something for everyone!

Not In, But Just Outside of Charlotte

For Hendrick Motorsports, close proximity to Charlotte Motor Speedway was one reason to grow its business in Concord. Masterson also noted that the team has been able to expand its physical footprint (growing from one to nine buildings) without being limited by other nearby businesses, which proves that Hendrick Motorsports made the right decision when choosing Concord over other possible locations. It doesn’t feel as congested in Concord, and businesses are able to grow while maintaining access to everything they need to be successful.

Even the daily commute serves as another perk for employee recruitment and retention because Hendrick Motorsports’ workforce has no need to drive into the congested downtown traffic in Charlotte.

Amenities and Transportation

Not every business needs access to an airport, but Hendrick Motorports actually has its own hangar at the Concord-Padgett Regional Airport. With hundreds of employees flying in and out to races every week, it is a major resource for the company and its team members. Not having to maneuver through the massive Charlotte Douglas International Airport saves a lot of time and money for the professional stock car racing team.
