GO BOLD! Initiative Centers on Bold Women in Bold Careers
When choosing a career path, the automotive, construction, logistics and manufacturing industries may not be on the radar for many women, but a new Cabarrus Economic Development initiative is working to change that.
“GO BOLD! Bold Women in Bold Careers encourages women to explore challenging and nontraditional opportunities they may not have considered,” said LeeAnn Nixon, existing industry project manager. “Whether it’s machining, assembling, operating heavy equipment or learning a new skills trade, we’re aiming to expose them to all their career options, not just traditionally female roles.”
Career Survey Findings
Previously, the EDC conducted a survey to find out how women pick a career path and what’s most important to them. Results of the survey, which was funded through a Creative Economic Development Consulting grant, indicated that women’s friends, family and colleagues play a role in influencing career paths.
Additionally, the study found that women were interested in learning what skills, traits and education are needed for careers. Survey participants also want to know what the income potential is for such careers and where they can receive instruction or training.
GO BOLD! Website Launches
Based on these survey findings and other countywide research, the EDC and its initiative partners launched a one-stop shop website with detailed industry information to help women understand what businesses exist within the community and the types of available jobs.
For example, the construction career section defines what construction is (the act or process of building something), the skills and traits required (eye-hand coordination, numeracy), and relevant educational opportunities available (construction management program at UNC Charlotte). An outlook on construction jobs across the country, examples of the different types of construction careers, and a breakdown of average salaries in Cabarrus County is also highlighted.
Also included on the website are local and national articles and other news related to women in bold careers, such as Women at Corning, a Charlotte Observer article on women in tech jobs and how women make a difference in engineering.
Employment Opportunities and Other Resources
The workforce development initiative website also features employers that offer opportunities for women. “We’re proud to partner with local businesses that want to diversity in their workplace and hire talented women in full-time roles,” Nixon said. “Any employer who’s offering good wages, a benefits package and potential for advancement can contact me to be added to our employer list.”
