Construction booms in September

CONCORD – Construction continued to be strong during September with single family housing permits hitting the highest point for the month since 2007, according to reports in the Cabarrus County Construction Standards office.

Cabarrus County issued building permits for 122 single family detached home with a total value of nearly $17.1 million. Overall the county issued 274 permit worth an estimated $27.3 million.

The single family total is actual more homes than September, 2007 when the county issued 113 permits, but last month’s value was less than the $19.2 million in 2007.

Other recent September single family totals were: 69 for $9.1 million, 2014; 71 for $9.7 million, 2013; 64 for $7.7 million, 2012; 77 for $8.4 million, 2011; 38 for $4.8 million, 2010; 48 for $5.9 million, 2009; and 64 for $9.9 million, 2008.

Concord led the housing boom with 54 permits with a value of $6.2 million. That’s more than double the September, 2014 total of 22 homes for $2.7 million.

Unincorporated areas of Cabarrus County also saw a similar jump with 22 homes permitted worth $4.6 million. That’s up from 13 for $2.2 million a year ago.

Harrisburg had more single family permits than in the county with 24 but the value was lower at $3.6 million. Last September it was 18 for $2.5 million.

Kannapolis also saw an increase with 18 houses permitted worth nearly $2.4 million, up from 15 for $1.7 million.

September’s permits had housing totals making up more than half of all building for the first time in recent years.

Other recent September building permit totals were: 202 for $23, 2014; 185 for $28.3 million, 2013; 185 for $15 million, 2012; 207 for $19 million, 2011; 59 for $9.7 million in 2010; 105 for $13.6 million in 2009; 224 for $32.3 million in 2008; and 277 for $62.1 million in 2007.

The permit in September was for $3.4 million for a project at 7075 Aviation Blvd., Concord, where the Silverman Group of Charlotte has a project underway. It is being built by Intercon Building Company LLC. Aviation Boulevard is the street leading into Concord Regional Airport.

A permit has been issued for the new State Employees Credit Union that is being build off Rock Hill Church Road. The permit estimates value at more than $2.2 million. It is on Raiford Drive, which part of the development underway at Troutman Motors on Concord Parkway.

A Sam’s Mart carwash and Bojangle’s are expected to open soon the development. The Bojangle’s is waiting for the N.C. Department of Transportation to complete turn lanes off of Concord Parkway. The tentative opening date is Oct. 16.

A Dunkin’ Doughnuts is also scheduled for construction there. It will be one of three in the area under construction with stores under way at Christenbury Corners near Concord Mills and another on N.C. 49 in Harrisburg.
