Cabarrus County is served by two public school systems, Cabarrus County Schools and Kannapolis City Schools.   Combined, the two public school systems enroll more than 29,000 students.

The Cabarrus County School (CCS) system is the 10th largest school district in North Carolina and ranks 313th in size nationally. The district serves approximately 28,000 students in Pre-K through 12th grade. CCS employs almost 3,400 people and has 35 schools located throughout the county, 13 of these schools have opened since 1997.  As our community continues to grow, CCS are making all efforts to provide quality schools, instruction and opportunities to ensure the success of each student.

CCS is one of Cabarrus County's major employers, with more than 2,000 teachers, 1,297 student support staff and approximately 103 administrative staff.

North Carolina is number one in the country in terms of the number of National Board Certified (NBC) teachers and number one in number of newly certified teachers. CCS has over 2,000 teachers that have achieved National Board Certification. Equivalent to the CPA exam for accountants or the bar exam for lawyers, the National Board Certification documents a teacher's skills.  In addition over 735 of the system's teachers have advanced degrees.

The average SAT score for students in the CCS district is 1523 which ranks 17th in the state for SAT average scores.

National, State, and county SAT scores are a composite of both public and non-public schools. Cabarrus' results compare positively higher with both state and national scores.

Kannapolis City Schools - www.kannapolis.k12.nc.us

Kannapolis City Schools (KCS) operate independantly from the Cabarrus County School System even though they are located throughout Cabarrus and Rowan Counties. The district operates nine schools and serves 5,193 students from Pre-K through 12th grade.

Academic Excellence
KCS consistently has the highest Physical Science scores in North Carolina, and they outpreform the state in Biology, Chemistry, Algebra II, Geometry, Civics & Economics, Writing and overall high school student achiemement.   

Outstanding Staff
KCS has a National Educator of the Year, a National First-Year Teacher of te Year, the NC Principal of the Year, the Regional Teacher of the Year, and UNC Charlotte's Most Outstanding Teaching Graduate.  They also have a higher percentage of fully licensed and highly qualified teachers than the state average and a larger share who hold teaching's highest credential-certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. 

Advanced Curriculum
KCS is the home of the region's only Cyber Campus, which connects to the prestigious North Carolina School of Science and Matematics in Durham.  They offer a multiple high-level courses including Latin, Genetics and Biotechnology, Mandarin Chinese, AP Environmental Science, AP Biology, AP Statitics, AP Calculus, AP English, and AP History.  They also offer multiple honors-level courses and a full Career Technical Education program.

 Higher Education

More than 117,000 students are enrolled in degree or college-transfer programs at the 37 colleges, universities, community colleges and technical institutes located within the 13 county Charlotte Metro Region.  Cabarrus is fortunate to have easy access to top quality higer education.

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College - www.rowancabarrus.edu
Rowan-Cabarrus Community College (RCCC) is located in Salisbury, NC and has a South Campus located in western Cabarrus County.  RCCC serves nearly 7,000 students and offers Associate in Applied Science Degree and Associate in Arts Degree. Diplomas and certificates are awarded for other occupational, adult and continuing education programs.  

North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC) and RCCC
RCCC will play an important role in the development and growth of the NCRC in Kannapolis. RCCC will help campus employers meet their workforce demands by having an on campus presense to train and educate students.  RCCC is in the process of building a $26 million facility at the campus that will be the home of RCCC's two associate degree programs in biotechnology and agricultural biotechnology and continuing education programs related to biotechnology and clinical research. These programs and others RCCC will develop will prepare local residents to meet many of the NCRC's future workforce needs. 

University of North Carolina at Charlotte - www.uncc.edu
Located less than 5 minutes from Cabarrus County, on 1000 acres of wooded land,  UNC Charlotte has been one of the driving forces for growth in this region.  It serves more than 23,000 students and offers 90 Bachelor's degree programs, 62 Master's and 18 Doctoral programs.

Known for research , UNC Charlotte is comprised of seven colleges which include: Architecture, Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering, Education, Information Technology, Health and Human Services--and a School of Nursing.

Cabarrus College of Health Sciences at CMC-NorthEast - www.cabarruscollege.edu
Located on the main campus of CMC-Northeast in Concord, Cabarrus College of Health Science has more than 420 students enrolled in five associate degree and three Bachelor's degree programs.  The College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Cabarrus College has experienced tremendous growth this decade, with enrollment doubling and applications for admission increasing nearly 200% since 2003.
